County Develops Water Master Plan

County Water Master Plan being developed by County Government of Nandi in partnership with Water Sector Trust Fund will play a key role in provision of clean and adequate water to the community.

The plan which is being reviewed by officials and stakeholders of various water utilities across the County is reviewing a number of key areas including population of Nandi, Agricultural and Industrial activities to be undertaken, Forest cover, Management and sustainability of water projects.

Objectives of Water Master Plan is to increase water coverage across the County, reduce distance covered to get portable water, ensure conservation and protection of natural resources and to also make maximum use of 2500 ha of land to be irrigated.

Currently, only 250 ha of land is being irrigated.

CECM LENRCC Mr. Baliach emphasized on the need to have a comprehensive plan. “The plan should give a clear picture of water sources available in Nandi to ensure continuity and longevity of our water projects” he said.

WSTF will soon commence the second phase of funding a number of Water projects including Lelmokwo, Kimng’oror, Kimatkei, Cheptil and design of Kobujoi water projects.

Kenya Water Towers To Improve Water Towers In The County

A team from Kenya Water Towers is in Nandi to interact with the community who are to benefit from improved livelihoods along Kibirong and King’wal wetlands that will soon be gazzetted as water towers.

The team led by Madam Vicky, will develop a document on Community development action plan bearing in mind the views of the community, how best to improve their livelihoods, economic activities to practice for instance bee keeping, carpentry, beehives made from bamboo and tree nurseries.

So far, Kamenjeywo, Kibirong wetlands stewardship and Jubilee youth groups have already been trained on vegetative propagation.
Bamboo can be used to make toothpicks,charcoal, Furniture, Paper among others.

CECM LENRCC Mr. Baliach urged the community to embrace plantation of bamboo. “Not only is bamboo eco friendly but it also boosts the livelihoods of the community after selling the finished products” he added.

Chief Officer Mr. Mang’ira asked KWT to carry out extensive research in order to know the varieties that do well in Nandi.

An acre of land can have between 185 to 200 giant bamboo seedlings to be planted and mature in 5 years time.

Nandi County Extends Restoration Order

Extension of restoration order on the entire riparian land will make farmers put more effort in ensuring that they cut all eucalyptus trees along riverine areas.

Speaking at Kapkoimur Primary,in Mosop Sub County, Governor Sang emphasized on the need to eradicate eucalyptus trees as they lead to loss of water in the catchment areas. “We have extended restoration order for entire riparian land in Nandi County to 28th February 2019 to allow the community plant indigenous trees as they get rid of eucalyptus”, he said.

CECM LENRCC Mr. Baliach added that the committee will ensure that the environment is well conserved and protected for generations to come

LREB Pillar Meeting On Water, Environment and Climate Change Held

Lake Region Economic Bloc encourages utilization of resources available for betterment of the society.

The 4th LREB Summit that kicked off yesterday emphasizes on the need to spur economic growth in LREB regions by optimizing the available resources in individual counties.

Speaking during the pillar meeting on Water, Environment and Climate Change, CECM Lands, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Mr. Baliach emphasized on Proper planning and monitoring of activities relating to the department within the blocs.

“We will ensure that implementation of projects done by development partners and County Governments are well done and sustained, Water Service Providers are advised to work hand in hand with County Governments to ensure implementation of the same”he said.

Areas of discussion included conservation of shared water towers, Inter County water projects and Water supply and Sewarage Management.

Lake Region Economic Bloc has 14 counties among them Nandi, Kisumu, Busia and Trans-Nzoia.

Efforts To Increase Forest Cover Within The County Intensified

The County Government is fully committed in ensuring that the forest cover within the county is safeguarded.

Already, the Department of Lands, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change has signed Transition Implementation Plans that shows the devolved forestry functions.

Today, the Chief Officer LENRCC Dr. Mang’ira, Sub County administrator Mosop Mr. Chemogos and Kenya Forest Officers led by Chief Conservator Mr. Kennedy Muskiton visited Kiptangus, Kipsuswai and Kamwega areas in Nandi North forest with the aim of knowing the status of the forest.

“The forest has been encroached and it is evident that the trees are being cut down for money and also for domestic use, it will not be business as usual as the destruction interferes with water catchment areas and culprits will be dealt with” Dr. Mang’ira said.

In February this year, the National Government issued a National moratorium on logging activities in public and community forests.

During the visit, the CO said that the department will ensure that the community is well informed on the need to conserve the environment. He said that plans are in place to train Community Forest Associations Members on participatory forest management plan

County Trains Water Users In Kapsabet

The Kenya Water Institute in partnership with Water Sector Trust Fund conducted a one week training to members of Nandi County Water Users Association.

The objective of the training was to equip the committee members with the neccesary knowledge needed for proper implementation of water projects.

Speaking during the closing session, CECM LENRCC Mr. Baliach thanked the facilitators for the initiative to empower the community on proper managerial skills on matters relating to water projects.

Areas of discussion included operational and maintenance concepts for water and Sanitation provisions, human resource management, water supply management, tarrifs
setting, water quality Standards, meter reading
installation and servicing among others.

COUNTY IN BID TO BOOST WATER MANAGEMENT

Proper management of Water Utilities ensures that there is adequate water for use by the community.

This is why the Water Sector Trust Fund, Swedish Government and County Government of Nandi have partnered to implement a number of Water projects across the 6 Sub Counties.

Kimng’oror community water users association is among the group that has benefited from the partnership.

Currently, there are 104 houses that have been connected with water, with improved sanitation facilities constructed.

Already more than seven villages have benefited from the project.

CECM LENRCC Baliach thanked the Water Users Committee for the proper records management.

“What this group has shown is very impressive, I will ensure that other water utilities visit Kimng’oror to see how a community can manage a Water project to the required standards” he added.

The 6 Water Kiosks in Kimng’oror are all functional.

He also visited Cheptil Water Users Association in Kabisaga Ward where over 10 villages have benefited from the project.

The project uses water from Cheptil Dam that was constructed in 1957 by a partnership of Sweden and Netherlands.

NANDI COUNTY RECEIVE WATER TANKS FROM KAPSABET WATER COMPANY

Kapsabet Nandi Water and Sewerage Company have donated five water tanks to the County Government of Nandi as part of the company’s efforts to support Nandi residents through its corporate social responsibility.

The water reservoirs were handed over to Mr. Solomon Mang’ira, the Chief Officer for Lands, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change by Mr. Kiboi KANAWASCO managing director.

Each has the capacity of 5,000 litres. The facilities are expected to benefit residents from different sectors. Each reservoir has the capacity to serve hundreds of residents, according to officials from the water company.

While handing over the tanks at an event which took place at the water company’s offices in Kapsabet Municipality, Mr. Kiboi said the donation intends to respond to the needs of Nandi residents besides providing them financial solutions.

“KANAWAWCO strives to improve the welfare of the communities we serve. The type of life led by an individual and what affects their domestic needs influences their efforts to achieve economic transformation and financial independence,” said Kiboi.

Speaking at the event, the County Chief Officer for Lands, appreciated the water company for the support, adding that the donation is an indication that KANAWASCO cares for the development of the county, a situation that starts with improvement of citizens’ welfare.

He urged the beneficiaries who will receive the tanks to use the reservoirs responsibly.

The Chief Officer said that water is a constitutional right for every Kenyan. He said that Governor Sang is committed to working with all stakeholders and partners to ensure safe, clean and enough water for all.

Nandi Hills set to benefit from a water project as African Development Bank (ADB) partners with the county government

The County Government of Nandi, through donor funding from African Development Bank (ADB), has initiated a water project at a cost of Ksh 600M to end the acute water scarcity in Nandi Hills hospital, dispensaries, schools and homesteads in the region under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program for Nandi Hills Water Supply and Sanitation program. The Project will be expedited and roll out for pre bidding, designing and building works will begin soon.

During a site visit exercise, the CECM in charge of Lands, Environment, Water and Natural Resources Mr. Jacob Tanui, his counterpart for Trade, Investment and Industrialization Dr. Kiplimo Araap Lagat together with Member of County Assembly representing Nandi Hills visited Mokon River where the extraction of piped water will be done before being treated next to Nandi hills forest.

Starting next month, water reserve tanks with a capacity of 1Million liters will be strategically erected at Kosoiywa Secondary School to benefit residents of Nandi Hills and its environs by the use of gravity before another tank is set near George Mutai academy.

Mr. Tanui noted that once the project is completed, the residents of Nandi hills will enjoy piped water in their homes but they will have to pay bills monthly at a fair cost

as soon as the project starts rolling.

On his part, the CECM Trade Dr. Lagat said that this is one of the flagship projects that will ensure regular supply of clean water to schools, hospitals and homesteads of Nandi Hills residents. He requested the residents to cooperate with the contractor as soon as the laying of pipes commence.

Kosoiywa secondary school was identified as the most ideal position to host the largest reserve tank because of its high altitude that will ensure residents first benefit from the force of gravity before pumping using electricity when the water levels are low.

Nandi County celebrates The International Youth Week as opportunities for the youth are unveiled by Governor Stephen Sang

Unemployment is an alarming challenge that has seen educated youth waste away in so many struggles due to the limited job opportunities. The annual graduations that are highly celebrated, be they certificates, diplomas or degrees carry a lot of joy for excellence only for them to mutate into anxiety and restlessness soon after due to the limited job market. Youth end up taking any available opportunities to make ends meet.
The County Government of Nandi through various departments is intentional in addressing the challenges facing the youth in Nandi County.
As the International Youth Week comes to wrap up, the county government is set to unbundle the opportunities that seek to improve the state of the youthful population. The Department of Public Service has unveiled 400 internship opportunities for the youth across the county. This is in line with Governor Stephen Sang’s manifesto that pledged to create internship opportunities for the youth so as to enable them acquire the necessary skills and experience as they enhance their professional growth.

The opportunities that do not require any past working experience is open to any youth with a certificate, diploma or degree from a reputable institution. This will ensure that skilled and deserving youth who may not have had an opportunity to work after their schooling get a chance to work and acquire the required experience as they also serve Nandi County. The interns will be paid a stipend of between Ksh. 8,000 and Ksh. 12,000. Applications can be done through <a href=”https://interns.nandi.go.ke”/> https://interns.nandi.go.ke .

The Department of Education on the other has also opened opportunities for 800 ECD teachers whose successful applicants will have an opportunity to serve for at least three years. Among other opportunities set for the youth on this day include enhancement of the 30% Access to Government Procurement Opportunities. Most youth with start-up companies lack capital even after winning the tenders thus affecting the quality of works done. In a bid to bridge this gap, the county government is set to sign an MoU with Youth Enterprise Development Fund so as to increase the uptake of tenders by youths in the various county departments, and linking up with institutions that provide youth friendly loans for LPOs and LSOs.

On to top of this, the county government is heading towards Performance Based Contracting that enable the youth organize themselves and benefit from the County Government’s funds for maintenance of roads in each ward by performing tasks such as bush clearing, drainage opening, installing culverts etc. Contracts under this program will run for a period not less than 1 year and not more than 3 years.The youth has a role in protecting the environment.

The Department of Youth in conjunction with that of Environment is set to offer youth opportunities to benefit from being engaged in planting trees, establish nurseries and supply the seedlings to the county government under an agreed framework.

Among other programs are entrepreneurial training and start-up support, sponsorship for training and acquisition of technical skills and opportunities for scholarships and sponsorship’s based on talent where the county government will identify, exploit and support in the development of youth talent while engaging stakeholders who can extend scholarship opportunities for such talents.
