TEN ATHLETES FROM NANDI TO BATTLE IT OUT IN THE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

A team from Nandi county participated in the cross country trials and relays held in Baringo county. Uasin Gishu County also took part in the event which brought together the junior and the senior category runners in 6 and 10 km respectively.

 

The cross country drew participants from the three counties who had had been training in readiness for the competition.

The trials saw a team of six best performing athletes picked to proceed to the national cross country championships slated for late February in Eldoret.

Nandi County, being the source of champions put up and impressive performance by emerging the second in the overall performances while Uasin Gishu on the other hand came third.

Rodgers Kwemoi from Uasin Gishu emerged the best in the 10 km race while Qualine Kiprop from Baringo County bounced away with the female category title. In the junior category, GideonRono and Lydia Jeruto both from BaringoCounty won the titles.

The source of champions however managed to produce a majority of athletes who qualified for the national championships with a whooping Ten out of the twenty four athletes who will carry the north rift region flag at the national championships.

ELIUD KIPCHOGE ATHLETIC TRAINING CAMP NEARS COMPLETION

The first phase on the new Eliud Kipchoge training camp at a cost of 100 million is near completion. The construction began last year and is scheduled for full occupancy in the next four months.

The facility will be adequately equipped with the latest advances that the field of sports has to offer.

Some of the attractions include an in-house physician evaluation rooms, changing rooms and offices. There will also be a 200 capacity bed hostel,a board room and a gym.

Earlier today, Sports, Youth affairs and Arts CEC Elly Kurgat and his Roads and Infrastructure counterpart Eng. Hillary Koech together with officials from the public works visited the facility to inspect on the progress made by the contractor.

Eng. Koech commended the quality of work done so far. He urged the contractor to speed up the remaining work and complete it on time.

Sports county executive committee member Elly Kurgat said that the county government will intervene to improve other training grounds so as to nurture more sports talents.

He said this will go a long way in giving the youths an opportunity to showcase their talents.

PROMISES MADE, PROMISES DELIVERED

The county has received the first lot of interns following the 400 internship opportunities advertised in September 2018.

The internship program is rolled out by the County in fulfillment of one of Tuga Tai’s manifesto agenda “to give the youths an opportunity to practice and sharpen their skills as well as getting relevant experience in their fields of specialization through internship program”.

Interns following proceedings during an induction program organized by the county Government. The first batch of 200 interns reported yesterday.

The internship program will be rolled out in two (2) phases each year and will cover six months.

During the application process that was done online, the County Public Service Board received 3558 applications and managed to shortlist 400 applicants for the available opportunities.

These 400 applicants have therefore been divided into two groups of 200 applicants and each group taking six (6) months internship period.

At the end of six months ending in June 2019, the first set exits to give room for the next new set which will run from July to December 2019. Thereafter the internships are once again advertised for the year 2020.

The first group reported today and went through an induction session organized by the Chief officer in charge of Public Service,Ms. Grace Sugut in a meeting held at the municipal hall.

The induction process was also attended by Chief Officers and County Directors.

The CECM for Administration, Public Service and e-Government -Ms Teresa Morogo, who chaired the meeting, emphasized on the County’s great determination in creating more opportunities for the youths to get exposed in the work environment and get experience in their career path.

The interns will report to their various work stations from tomorrow.

HOSTS NANDI HUMILIATES VISITORS IN DAY 2 OF KYISA GAMES

Nandi County teams dominated the second day of the Ongoing Kenya Intercounty Sports Association Competitions held in the Cristened Source of Champions.
The Competitions which brings together Youth under the age of 25 years is being played in various fields across the County.
The Annual competitions has attracted a number of Counties which are battling it out in Volleyball, Basketball and football competitions.
In football male category, Nandi county team maintained the lead in Group A after holding a strong Busia County team to a 0-0 draw in a bruising match that was played at Kapsabet Boys playground on Tuesday afternoon.
In Volleyball female category, the formidable Nandi county team mercilessly trounced Kirinyaga County by sweeping all the first 3 sets to nil in the match that were held at Kapsabet Showground.
The Male Volleyball category also earned Nandi County the lead after the young Champions crushed Nyandarua County 3-1 sets where Kirinyaga won the last set which came as a solace after the hysteric defeat they had suffered in the first 3 sets.
In Basket ball male category, Nandi run over their Siaya Counterparts after garnering a whooping 44 to 18 points.
Nakuru County also crushed Makueni with 37 against Makueni’s 28 point while Kisumu beat Bungoma 31points against 25 points respectively.
In Basketball Women category saw the hosts Nandi County humiliating Siaya County with 33 points to 11 while
Makueni losing to Bungoma with 25-34
Siaya later suffered another defeat after Kisumu County handed them a thorough beating of 27-42 points.
At the Nandi hills stadium, Turkana County Football team won their first match in the 5th edition after scoring 7-1 against Trans Nzoia County while Garissa County scored 2-1 against UasinGishu County.
Bungoma later held Garissa to a 0-0 draw in a late evening match that saw Garissa remain on top of Pool C of the Competitions.

NANDI CONTINUES ITS WINNING STREAK ON DAY TWO OF KYISA GAMES.

The Kenya Youths Inter-County Sports Association tournament entered its second day with hosts Nandi continuing its dominance in the event.

Nandi volleyball men picked their second win to stay top of their pool by beating Nyandarua 3 sets to 1. (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21)

The women’s volleyball team picked their first win when they hammered struggling Kirinyaga side by 3 straight sets to nil.

In the football category, Nandi played to a barren draw sharing the spoils with a stubborn Busia side to stay top of Pool A with 4 points from two games.

In other fixtures of the day, Garrissa defeated Uasin Gishu 2-1 while Turkana trashed Trans Nzoia 7 -1 in the men’s football.

Nandi also registered wins in Basketball matches. The men’s basketball team beat Siaya 44-18 while the women’s team beat Busia 30-11.

The games continues tomorrow with last group matches being played.

ALL IS SET FOR VIVO ENERGY GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN NANDI

A number of golfers are expected to battle it out for the Vivo Energy Golf tournament in Nandi Bears club on Saturday 17 2018.

According to Dr. Kimeli Mutai the Nandi Bears Captain, preparations for the upcoming Vivo Energy Golf tournament are on top gear and all golfers will enjoy in the course which he says is now very green.

Mutai said that the Events title sponsor and  Nandi Bears club have adequately invested in publicity of the annual golf competition and the turn up is expected to be good.

The Captain will be Teeing off  at 10:00am together with Kakamega captain Hieronim Ikhokoro who will be teeing o together with S.Miningwo and E. Kenduiwo.

Home lady Captain Irene Brooker will also be taking part taking to the greens at 9:00am with E. kemboi and K. Chandaria.

NANDI TO SPONSOR ONE THOUSAND ATHLETES FOR KASS MARATHON

More than 10,000 athletes are expected to take part in the 11th edition of the Kass Marathon to be flagged off in Nandi County on November 18.

The runners will get down to a grueling battle at the competition that starts at the Source of Champions.

The flagging point will be at Kapsabet Boys High School gate and end at Eldoret Sports Club for the full race.

The county government of Nandi is sponsoring 1,000 athletes who will participate in the marathon. Registration is ongoing at the county department of Sports, Youth and Arts in Kapsabet town.

The 10KM (for men and women) starts at Eldoret International Airport and finishes at Eldoret Sports Club. The Family fun and corporate race for Children, corporates, groups and companies starts at Barng’etuny Plaza and also finish at Sports Club.

Those eligible to participate for the 42KM, should be over 18 years, for 10KM and 5km is open.

The Kass Marathon extravaganza will be spread across two counties of Nandi and Uasin Gishu. Kapsabet will host a breakfast meet on the day and a big ceremony at the Sports Club in Eldoret.

The race organizers will introduce a running chip which will drag the athletes in four areas after every 10km along the course.

Kass marathon whose main goal is to nurture and discover talent is set to attract world champions as well as budding athletes in the region. The event is a scouting opportunity for new talent in the athletics fraternity.

Sports County Executive Elly Kurgat noted “We are proud to be a part of discovering new talent that will fly the Kenyan flag high. Such is the impact of this event that we as Nandi County are humbled to be a part of a movement that is in line with our mantra transforming lives”.

The CEC was speaking after presenting Kshs.1 million dummy cheque to Kass Media Group CEO Julius Lamaon.

He was accompanied by the Chief Officer for Sports Kennedy Tanui.

The marathon is considered as one of the world’s toughest races, being ran in a high altitude region.

NANDI COUNTY READY TO HOST KYISCA GAMES

It is all systems go as the county government of Nandi is ready to host this year’s Kenya Youth Inter County Sports Association Games (KYISCA) games.

The fifth edition of the Kenya Youth Inter County Sports Association Games (KYISCA) will be held at Nandi’s Kaspabet showground.

The event will take place from December 15-22.

County Director for Sports Daniel Sitienei said more than 8,000 guests are expected at the week-long sports extravaganza.

He was speaking today during KYISCA governing council meeting held in Kapsabet town where he represented the county executive member for sports. The meeting was well attended by representatives from 22 counties where two CECs Denis Muchimi CEC Sports Kirinyaga County and his Kwale counterpart Ramadhan Bungale, four Chief Officers, twelve Directors and several county sports officers were in attendance.

Nandi County has prepared teams to participate in various sporting activities that include soccer and volleyball for both men and women.

So far 22 counties have confirmed their participation at the national event. The counties are Nandi, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, Kakamega, Marsabit, Nakuru, Kitui, Wajir, Meru, Narok, Tana River, Garissa, Nyandarua, Busia, Nyamira, Kilifi, Kisii, Kisumu, Trans Nzoia, Siaya, Turkana and Kirinyaga.

NANDI MOURNS THE PASSING ON OF VETERAN ATHLETE NAFTALI BON

Nandi County is mourning the death of veteran athlete Naftali Bon.

The former 4×400 meters relay champion succumbed on Friday November 2 while undergoing treatment at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital after a short illness.

He competed for Kenya in the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City in the 4 x 400 meters relay where he won the silver medal in a record time of 2:59.6 with his team mates Daniel Rudisha, Munyoro Nyamau and Charles Asati. He shares the cover of the September 1969 issue of Track and Field News with Kipchoge Keino.

Kenya won nine medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The medals included 3 gold medals, 4 silver and 2 bronze.

The gold medals were won by Kipchoge Keino (1500 metres), Naftali Temu (10000 metres) and Amos Biwott (3000 metres steeplechase).

The silver medals were taken by Wilson Kiprugut (800 metres), Kipchoge Keino (5000 metres), Benjamin Kogo (3000 metres steeplechase), Daniel Rudisha, Charles Asati, Naftali Bon and Munyoro Nyamau (4×400 metres relay).

The bronze was won by Naftali Temu (5000 metres) and Philip Waruinge in boxing under the featherweight category.

Naftali Bon was born on 9th October, 1945. He passed on at age 75.

Until his death, he was a resident of Kapng’etuny village, Chesumei Sub County in Nandi County.

PHASE 1 OF PROPOSED ELIUD KIPCHOGE SPORTS COMPLEX NEARLY COMPLETE

Several years after the need for a new modern athletic facility in Nandi county first became apparent, the proposed Eliud Kipchoge annex sports complex is nearing completion with the new facility set to open in early 2019.

The new sports complex will provide 200-bed residential training camp, a gymnasium, arts studio, a swimming gallery; among other sporting facilities. The first phase will cost 100 million.

“This is real.  Our vision is to create a real facility that is appealing to our athletes and people not just in Kapsabet but across the entire county.  We want to build a sports facility that can be a real tourism component for us and the region and we’re well on our way,” said Sports CEC Elly Kurgat while on an inspection tour of the facility.

“Currently, most budding and established athletes from Nandi County are training in other camps in the north rift region. That  will be a thing of the past, we want to make it possible for them to train at the source of champions,” said the County executive.

Once complete, the training camp will boost the image of the county, which is the source to world renown athletes.
